Big Digs.......Battle Hill 2024: rediscovering a lost Pictish Hillfort.
Some results from my annual busman's holiday
Battle Hill Huntly….
So as you all know I spend a lot of July and August digging, first in Battle Hill, Huntly on a newly discovered hillfort and then in King’s Park Stirling on another newly discovered hillfort and a Bronze Age cemetery.
At Battle Hill one of our key discovery was a massive 4.2 m wide rampart dating to the Late Roman Empire period when the Picts began to challenge Rome’s Eagles.
The massive foundations appear to have been subsequently robbed out but appear to comprise a massive front kerb (blue line) with a smaller rear kerb (blue dash line) with indication of timber lacing (blue circle). And on top of that it was built over an earlier defensive fence line (red line) which dates to c 400-200 BC.
And here is a wee video from the site….
Kings Park, Stirling
My next dig starts on Tuesday 6th August and runs for 2 weeks. This will return to our Roman period small fort at the highest point of Kings Park and but also uncover an element of lost Bronze Age cemetery. Please come along if you fancy a nosy. Take either of the paths to the south of the Tennis courts and walk west…..look for odd people, with strange clothes having fun in holes….(definitely not golfers!). For those that can’t make it I will produce lots of updates and videos!
