The Diary - upcoming news and events from 3rd June onwards.
Week 23 2024 a 2000 year old hollow way?
Welcome to Stirling Archaeology’s ‘The Diary’ , a weekly summary of all the interesting history and archaeological things happening round Stirling, including some of my adventures which finishes with a very bad joke and a poem so make sure you read to the end!
If you have an event or a group you’d like to promote please get in contact.
Murray’s Meanders!
I spent most of the week digging at camping which ended in a mildly drunken barbeque, camping and a refreshing dook. I will update date you on the results in due course but here is a little video about the original route into Kippen!
Next week I am looking forward to a meeting in Cowane’s House to discuss its future….you can join in too!

The City Heritage Trust is also keen to hear from you about
A Heritage Strategy for Stirling
There are two questionnaires: a quick 10-minute survey and an extended questionnaire, which has additional space to share ideas and thoughts.

Stirling Field and Archaeological Society.
The Society’s next outing is on Tuesday 11 th June, to Flanders Moss , a raised bog that has remained essentially unchanged for 8,000 years. It covers 8sq.km and is home to a wide variety of plants and insects. Rain or shine, it is well worth a visit to enjoy a quiet stroll along prepared board walks with lots to see on a June evening. The visit will be all the more enjoyable because a guide from Nature Scot will be there to tell us about the sights and answer questions. Leader: Liz (01786 860650).
Meet at the bus stop at Castle View Park and Ride, Kildean, at 6.30pm for directions. Non -members are welcome.
At the end of June we will be returning to Bannockburn House, from Sunday 23 rd to Sunday 30 th , to continue our investigation of the area adjacent to the early (possibly 16 th Century!) mine shaft that we discovered last year. We will be looking at the route-way from the shaft to a nearby ‘coal road’ and for any associated structures. If you would like to take part there are opportunities for digging to remove vegetation and topsoil or, less demanding, opportunities for washing, identifying and recording finds.
Spaces are limited and must be booked by email to archeology@bannockburnhouse.scot, indicating whether you are interested in ‘digging’ or ‘washing’[or both], and which days you would like to attend.
