Welcome to my regular piece of research, the second of two weekly blogs I publish.
I thought an old name for Stirling was Snowdon.
Yes and no… it’s an older alternative but really made up in the 14th century to link Stirling to Arthurian legend.
So it was not the Roman name for Stirling, When i went to Stirling High in the mid 80s and i was placed in House Snowdon and told by the teacher that that's the connection with the school, Randolph, Douglas and Stuart being the other Houses.
Definitely not. The houses are all heroic connections.. Randolph fought at Bannockburn; Douglas is the hero of Scott’s lady of the lake.
Thankyou Murray for the information that has enlightened me.
Thanks, fascinating stuff. Places names are a source of endless interest.
Thanks very much!
Thank you, Murray. It’s always a joy to read about your work.
Thanks very much Elspeth!
